The Philippines’ Brightest Stars

Meet XLR8 – The New Boyband on the Block!

Korean boybands are huge hits in the Philippines. Now is the time to have our very own!

Why do Filipinos love K-pop boybands like FTIsland, TVXQ, Big Bang, SS501 and Super Junior so much? Is it because of their sleek look? Is it because of their hip songs? Is it because of their cool grooves? Or is it because of their infectious music videos?

The long wait is over. I believe we now have a boyband that will give these k-pop groups a run for their money. Introducing XLR8!

XLR8 has 8 members namely Francis Ramos, Carlo Lazerna, Hideaki Torio, Caleb Santos, Arkin Del Rosario, Melmar Magno, Meljohn Magno and Adrian Muhlach.

They are being helmed by Viva to be launched anytime this month of March.

You might ask, how do they sound? Do they have swagger? The “it” factor? Are they cool or are they just another baduy boyband just like what we had in the past?

Well, Starmometer believes they sound very current. Their vocals are way BETTER than any Korean boybands that you can name. Hear for yourself to believe. Here’s the radio rip of their upcoming single “You’re So Hot!”:

Do they have swagger? Absolutely! Check out the teaser of their dance routine for “You’re so Hot!”:

Although their songs could be better, i believe we now have the boyband that will resurrect Pinoy Pop. XLR8 is our answer to Super Junior and other Korean boybands that we embraced.

Watch out for the launching of XLR8 any day this month. It will be a start of something good in Pinoy Pop!

  4. EWWWWWWWWW… EPIC FAIL. Bakit ba may mga ganito pa sa mundo? Mga dakilang manggagaya. I really hate OPM or any music na galing sa Pilipinas (except indigenous instrumental music).

  6. what the heck?! okay? giyera ng mga pinoy? well, actually, super KPOP addict ako. and i must say that kpop celebrities are better than them.

hate is a very strong word to use..
    mga pilipino kayo hindi koreano.
    maypa-eew2 pa kayo jan.
kayo rin kaya ang kadiri jan.
imbes na tangkilikin niyo yung opm
    puro kpop inaatupag niyo..
    makonsensya kayo!!
    MAHIYA KAYO SA SARILI NIYO!!!

Yes, Tama ka diyan. Pinoys are just being BIASED after all. Una kasi nating narinig, nakita, napanood at na-adapt ang K-Pop kaya ngayon na lumabas na ang P-Pop, we never found the will to accept and like it. Bakit nung lumabas and J-Pop, hindi man lang kayo nag-react? Tas ngayong P-Pop ang lumabas, todo todo ang galit niyo. You never even gave them a chance. Hindi naman natin kailangang mag-compare eh. Imbes na hanapin niyo yung SIMILARITY at murahin niyo `to, Look for the SIMILARITY and learn to appreciate it.

Nakakahiya kayo, sariling atin tinatakwil niyo. Mahiya kayo sa balat niyo, PLEASE.

  13. ….. Before you bash and form an anti group, why don’t you try listening to their other songs? Like for you and dance with me.

I understand why you people don’t really like them, but it’s always the same… Walang originality? Try making a song that’s 100% original, you can’t.

Palagi nalang ganito eh. You know what’s the worst part about you people bashing? Don’t you have pride?

  15. I’m not really surprised that they came up with P-pop since probably they just wanted Filipinos to adore their own music
Though, I’m not really into the whole idea that they said “Their vocals are way BETTER than any Korean boybands that you can name.” because for a fact they just started as a group and are only known here in the Philippines, not even everybody knows them.
I’m pretty sure when I ask my classmates they wouldn’t even be able to name them. How can they say they’re better, plus their dance moves are amateur compared to those of Korean acts and I know for a fact that Kpop groups are well known for their great dance skills.
I myself is a Jpop fan. I don’t like Kpop that much anymore but I still think they’re better.
I do wish though that Filipinos would have their originality.

  19. I’m not really a fanatic but I think I’ll like this group. I heard their songs and they’re all good. Filipinos should learn how to patronize their own talents. How would they make it to the international scene if their co-Filipinos are bashing them. If you don’t like them, then keep quiet. Sure, you can give your own opinion, but make sure it’s a constructive one. Destructive criticisms are nowhere to go.

    Comment by jem | April 11, 2010

  34. Wow. I am surprised, astounded, astonished, amazed on how some of the comments here are so unpatriotic. I cannot believe that SOME of the people who posted comments here WOULD ACTUALLY WANT TO SEE THE PHILIPPINE MUSIC INDUSTRY DEAD rather than see a Filipino boy band do music SIMILAR to that of KPOP bands. I mean isn’t that just immature?

Wouldn’t all of you agree that the reason why such boy bands like XLR8 exist is because the Philippine music industry is trying desperately hard to win back their audience, who have been mesmerized by kpop or other asian music? Though, on the other hand, I am glad that the Philippine audience is now identifying itself with ASIA, which JAPAN would love to see, it doesn’t necessarily translate into the people hating and downsizing ITS OWN MUSIC.

Originality, yes, is good but there are just some things that we must copy cause we just know that it is the best. Aminin niyo, may mga ginaya na rin kayo dahil sa tingin niyo it is the best.

In the end, we are still Filipinos. I don’t want you guys to love XLR8, what I just want is for you to respect the music industry. If you want to download as many KPOP or JPOP music on your ipod or mp3 players, go ahead, do it. JUST don’t ever wish that the Philippine Music Industry should just die. Peace.

It's ok with the PPOP thingy but don't imitate ok even the album cover and also the sounds! The introduction of the song "You're so hot" sounds like SORRY SORRY of SUJU!

  44. Their description on this page are soooo biased.
Give the kpOp industry a run for their money? Please! That doesn’t even count as a joke. I’m not a kPop fan and I’m kind of annoyed how people treat them almost like Gods but I’ve heard some of them and they sound nice.
Their vocals are way BETTER???! With capital letters? Go ahead and suck their asses out why don’t you? Sure they sound nice but they are nowhere near the kpop voices I’ve heard!
If all you PRO’s out there support them because they are fellow Filipinos, then support Abu-Sayaf, MILF and the NPA. Surely they are Filipinos? Don’t go saying things like you’re some king of saint saying don’t do this don’t do that, because I`m SURE you do those things to. Everyone does it.
I could actually agree with giving them advise and a chance with it but with the way they act? It’s as if they’re all high and mighty already. Try being humble why don’t you?
And the ‘Hot’ song? Have you even understood what it actually says? They’re gonna do everything for ‘her’ because she’s hot! Just because she’s hot! So what if she’s not that hot? They won’t even give her a glance? It’s like they’re only after the S word. Geez. Use your heads before you support something. Dahil pinoy bigyan ng chance at tangkilikin. Grabe. Crab Mentality.. =_=”

  49. to the ones who hate the idea of having our own boyband.
rather than hating them don’t you think it will be more appropriate to support them? after all we should listen to proper songs with the right language. I agree that it may look like they copied it from kpop but still we should support our own, right?

    Comment by DenisTroll | April 15, 2010

  50. Oh, duh. Like the koreans have originality.. Go and look it up muna, will you? Those koreans started that whole “kpop” thing by imitating Western/Japanese music first (but of, course, with korean lyrics) and after some time they developed it to fit their own taste, hence the kpop we see today. So what’s ACTUALLY the point in bashing these boys who trained hard and are doing their best to make good FILIPINO music? I am a huge jpop/jrock/kpop fan myself, but “since” I’m only a fan, and I’m not the one dancing/singing/performing, I know I definitely am not in the position to say that “they suck”, or “they lack”, or whatnot… I mean, OPM music and visuals are finally starting to progress (that’s one of the good things I see in this), and even if they start not-so-original, believe me, no matter what it’ll become uniquely Filipino in the end. That’s what always happens. Again, please look up the history of kpop/jrock/jpop first before you talk about originality. AND give these boys their well-deserved chance. Neh?

  53. Could you filipinos stop hating on them. No originality?! Atleast they are creating song of their own that they composed unlike our artists today who only revive songs over and over and then sing and dance to american and korean songs. They are actually more original than you think if you would get your infos straight and listen to their other songs on their album before you start judging. We need to more supportive to our Filipinos artists instead of hating. HATING will not get the philippines anywhere so you might as well keep your mouth shut. :)

  56. Hmmm… I think only people who really appreciate music because of “music”, and artists because of their talents likes them. Others who only hankers after the korean dudes cuz of their *ahem, ahem* almost-perfect looks (Plastic surgery is a trend in Korea, mind you. If you have no idea how “horrendous” some Korean celebs look like before getting touch ups, look it up first.), height (ok, we’re just in the same position w/ Japan on this one), originality esp. with the music and vid (blame it on those who do the technical stuff, not them!) could never see these boys’ potentials. I mean, compared to the Korean guys who train for much longer time before debuting, I heard our XLR8 only did it for a year (quite not so sure, tho), and look how good they are now. People who overlook their capacity will definitely regret it sooner. AND please don’t forget that had the “foreigners” not caught Charice Pempengco’s performance on Youtube, her outstanding talent (which yar all bragging about right now) wouldn’t have been recognized properly, at all. It’s not that we Filipinos lack talent, looks, intelligence, etc., that we’ve become so left behind by our Asian neighbors. We just lack DISCERNMENT. LOTS OF IT. Madami na tayong nasayang, actually. If you look at some boygroups in Japan (which I am more familiar with), Aki is even way better-looking and more talented than many of them. And that’s just for example. Hope you fellow Filipinos think more about where you’ll give your loyalty to. I mean, even if those foreign celebrities go here and sign your cds and sing for you and whatnot, in the end you’re still STRANGERS to them. Even if you’re loving ‘em and their “original” music to death, like they’ll give a damn, right? I’m also a fangirl, but because the truth hurts so much, the appearance of XLR8 is good sign for me. They’re new and not yet as great as the pop experts in Korea, but isn’t that all the more reason they need NOONAS like us to support ‘em? Oh, well… This has been quite a long post. I think I just love Aki. XP

I’m proud to have the Filipino blood in me even though not purely Filipino, and I love how this guys showed the Pinoys that they got what it takes to sing and groove like those of super junior and some other groups….
To tell honestly, when I watched these guys perform during their debut I was impressed and I almost mistaken them as a Korean boy band not until I heard the lyrics….
    hahaha……
so to those bashers please don’t underestimate too early, they had just released thier debut song. They have more to show you guys and I was not disappointed to see a P-pop band even though I’m Korean half Fil..
I have lived on Korea and have seen countless K-pop bands..
and when I returned here I saw them…
It didn’t come to my senses that the Filipinos are yet again copying another famous thing….haha PEACE
No Offense for those who don’t like them…
but for me you are just scared that these boys will banish the aura of those kpop bands here in the Philippines…. but I think that won’t happen coz these guys will most probably develop their own concept that will suite the taste of the Filipinos…. haha….

  66. I actually have mixed feelings for this.

I initially felt disturbed. Racial issues popped in my head. I mistook them as a real K-pop boy band. But no, they’re Filipinos. I hope this has got nothing to do with chinky eyes/white skin/lean body/*insert Korean trait here*!!

I have to give credit for this boys to actually put up their foot to stardom. Believe me it’s not easy for them to proclaim that they will be somehow the ‘kpop’ in the Philippines. I do hope they have foreseen that doing this, they will be eventually be labeled as ‘copycats’ by avid Pinoy K-pop fans, like what other people have posted above this page.

It’s fair enough to reckon that this boy band was created because of pop culture. Plus, we Filipinos always love to have something great from our own land. As fellow Filipinos, we should at least give them respect. If you don’t like it, we don’t have to trash them. If you do, then that’s good.

Anyway, I’ve heard their voices. I watched their dances as shown in a video above. So far, I’m impressed, but I’m still cautious about them. I’ll try to keep my mind open as possible, as much as I don’t like this idea.

Ummm.. I also got a feeling that they’d be cooler or more original *I guess* if they’re under ‘rnb’ or ‘hiphop’ *for a second I thought they sounded like Git Fresh* XXXD Just saying though, forget this last paragraph :P

I will be waiting for something more of them. I hope they will do better. They better not FAIL if they plan to go mainstream to pop culture.

AND NOW SASABIHIN NYO NA WALA TAYONG KARAPATAN MAGKAROON NG SARILI NATIN???

    Comment by ran | April 21, 2010

  68. @ RAN – ditto.

But I have to be honest. There is no escape for fellow Filipinos to think that XLR8 are copying the K-POP scene. What makes me hesitate to give my full support for XLR8 is that the boys give off the ‘Korean’ feel. Though, it may be coincidental.. since the Philippines is multicultural to begin with.

Let’s just see what will come out of them before we give our criticisms.

What’s wrong with that? If you see them as gaya gaya sa K-pop idols, well it’s just a start, wala namang papansin sa kanila kung ang porma nila nakBarong tagalog eh.
